8:15 am – The GC as Consiglieri – The Importance of Gaining Trust

The General Counsel can either be the “head lawyer” or a trusted advisor to the CEO, senior executives and the Board of Directors. To be effective, a General Counsel must gain the trust of all these constituencies and be involved in making significant decisions. The title of General Counsel does not automatically mean that you will be in the “inner circle” of decision-making in your organization. In this session, we will talk about what it means to be a trusted advisor and different ways the General Counsel can earn that trust.

Russ Elmer
VP & General Counsel
LendingClub Corporation

9:15 am – The Rise of State and Local Regulation and Enforcement

With gridlock prevailing in Washington, state and local legislators and enforcers are enacting new regulatory requirements and taking a more active role in enforcement. This poses significant challenges to businesses and requires new strategies and skills for their in-house counsel to stay abreast of developments, be involved in advocacy efforts, and to improve compliance procedures. Our panel will discuss these challenges with specific examples and suggestions for ways that senior in-house counsel can address them.
